Show Spotlight: Justin Sillner

How did you become interested in radio?

I was originally put into the Radio 1 class my freshman year first semester. I didn’t have a big interest at the time but becoming a part of the WYBF staff, my interest has grown tremendously.

How did you and Liz decide are doing a joint radio show together?

Liz asked me if she wanted to do our show together and I agreed. I knew we would have a great show with the two of us.

What other activities are you involved in on campus?

I am the Features Editor for “The Loquitur.” I am involved with the campus’ news web show, “LOQation” and I am in the theater’s spring production, “Merrily We Roll Along.”

What would you like to do after graduation?

I would like to either work for a radio station or do lay out pages in a magazine.

What type of music do you play on your show and why?

We play Top40 and some classics. Liz and I both like Top40 but she likes some classic songs and I like some R&B songs from the ’90s. I guess it just depends who is running the board that day.

Who is your favorite singer/band? Do they influence the type of music you play?

I really like Nicki Minaj & Drake a lot right now. We play their songs on our show a lot.

How is “WYBF The Burn” now compared to when you started?

WYBF was a lot different. When I first became part of the staff the station was great but some departments weren’t the greatest. As I started to become an executive member, we started achieving goals that we made in the beginning of the year. We made history for the station. As assistant operations, I have a whole new perspective because I oversee everyone. I want each department to strive for their best. That’s my goal for them.

What are your duties as an executive member?

I oversee the station as a whole with Arielle. We settle problems within the station and its staff members. Arielle and I are the ones everyone comes to if anyone needs anything.

Do you ever get nervous? Or is it second nature by now?

Freshman year it was nerve racking to go on-air but now it is second nature. Our show is pretty much a talk show, Liz and I could talk on-air for hours if we could at this point.

Do you have any advice for anyone interested in radio?

I would say, GET INVOLVED even if you are not a communications major. Its tons of fun and we are greatly respected around campus. It’s a lot of work but it’s a good pay off in the end.

Do you have any loyal listeners? If so, how did you build a relationship with them?

Liz’s mom listens every week and plays it in her store. We tell everyone to listen every week so I’m sure we have some loyal listeners whether it is known to us or not.
